Embedded Parts (Anchor Plates & Anchor Bars)
An embedded part is cast into concrete before the pour so that a bracket, façade support, railing or equipment frame can be connected later. Once the concrete has set, the position cannot be corrected — so the drawing check at production stage is what decides whether the part works.
What an embedded part consists of
- Anchor plate — the exposed steel plate that carries the connection; thickness and plan size come from the load
- Anchor bars — welded to the back of the plate and cast into the concrete, transferring the load into the structure
- Welding — fillet or plug (through-deck) welding of the bars to the plate; the detail most often done incorrectly
- Coating — hot-dip galvanizing, painting or plating, chosen together with the way the part is later connected

Six things to confirm on the drawing
- Plate dimensions and thickness — dimensions alone are not enough
- Anchor bar diameter and quantity, and whether the two agree with the bar schedule
- Anchor bar length and hook form, with the concrete cover deducted
- Weld type and leg size, not just the note “weld all round”
- Material grade, and whether plate and bars are the same grade
- Surface treatment, including whether the fixing face must be left uncoated for welding on site
Points that most often go wrong
- Anchor bars cut short on site to clear reinforcement — this removes anchorage capacity and is one of the most serious defects.
- Welding after galvanizing — the zinc layer is destroyed at the weld, so the order is normally: weld, then galvanize, then touch up on site with a zinc-rich paint.
- Thin plate with large weld leg — burns through or distorts. Plate thickness and bar diameter have to suit each other.
- Position movement during the pour — fix the part with props and tie wire, and check the setting-out immediately before casting.

FAQ
- Can embedded parts be replaced with expansion anchors?
- They are not interchangeable. Anchorage mechanism, load capacity and behaviour under dynamic loading differ, so substitution has to be approved by the designer rather than decided on site.
- Should the parts be galvanized before or after welding?
- Normally welded first and galvanized afterwards, so that the full assembly including the weld is protected. The fixing face is often masked where it must remain weldable on site.
- What tolerance can you hold on the plate and bar positions?
- The critical setting-out tolerance is a casting tolerance, not a manufacturing one, and is normally controlled on site. Send the drawing and we will confirm the manufacturing tolerance we can hold on plate size, bar length and weld position.
- Do you supply material certificates?
- Yes, certificates for plates and bars can be supplied with the shipment, and third-party inspection can be arranged if required.
